Terracotta clay figures made for ritual use and buried with the dead as funerary objects during the Kofun Peroid (3rd to 6th centuries AD). As with many of the things you dig up from the ground from the 3rd to 6th century their presence has an enigmatic charm. These haniwa become messengers from the past. Not only did they accompany the dead to the afterlife, but they became messengers of the past, in dialog with the present.
